Kermit Hotopp
Kermit Dean Hotopp, 90, of Winfield, formerly of Washington, died Sunday, April 3, 2016, in Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 6, at the Rose Hill Memorial Garden in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight program.
Mr. Hotopp was born April 17, 1925, in Beaman, the son of Cleon V. and Irene H. (Applegate) Hotopp. He married Joan Moore on Aug. 4, 1945, in Marshalltown.
He graduated from Union High School and served his country in the Army during World War II, primarily in Europe, where he was held as a prisoner of war. He farmed for many years and then worked as a welder and machinist, ending his career at Crane in Washington. He enjoyed working on his Model A, gardening, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was able to take the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight in June 2012.
Surviving are three children, Sid Hotopp and wife Lois of St. Anthony, Rod Hotopp and wife Diane of Apache Junction, Arizona, and LuAnn Fischer and husband Todd of Winfield; one brother, Benny Joe Hotopp of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joan, on Nov. 24, 2009; one brother, Cullen ?Skip? Hotopp; one sister, Mary Lu Daleske; and one great-great-granddaughter.
