Larry A. “Pokey” West, 81, of West Chester, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington after failing in health for the past year.
The family will be present to receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 1, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County or the West Chester Heritage Building. Pokey was born March 9, 1941, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Wilbur W. and Margaret L. (Dill) West. He graduated from West Chester High School in 1960. Pokey was married to Linda (Kallaus) Ruch in August of 1979.
He was a life resident of West Chester, Iowa, where he worked as a self employed over the road truck driver. He enjoyed dirt track racing and drove the legendary number 92 car for many years. Pokey was inducted into the Race Car Hall of Fame in Oskaloosa and Hawkeye Downs.
He is survived by his wife, Linda West of West Chester, Iowa; son, Trent West and wife Tara of North Liberty, Iowa; one granddaughter, Bexley; brother, Tom West and wife Rhonda of Springdale, Arkansas; brother, Rob “Rueben” West and wife Rhonda of Haskins, Iowa; sister-in-law, Nancy West and friend Dick Wells of Washington, Iowa; nephew, Timothy West of Fayetteville, Arkansas; nephew, Bret West and wife Ronda of Wayland, Iowa; niece, Jodi Latcham and husband Robert of Washington, Iowa; niece, Jaimee Edwards and husband John of Washington, Iowa; and nephew, Travis West of Iowa City, Iowa.
Pokey was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Steve “Steamer” West; and stepson, Cory Ruch.
