Larry D. Schweitzer
Larry D. Schweitzer, 87, formerly of Hedrick, died at 11 a.m. May 30, 2022 at Vista Woods Care Center.
He was born July 17, 1934 near Martinsburg, IA to Fred and Grace Dickey Schweitzer. He met Margaret Kautman at a dance club at the YWCA and they married on March 31, 1957.
He attended elementary in Martinsburg, IA. He was a member of 4-H where he showed sheep. His first job was during high school in Farson, IA when he was asked to use his 1932 Model A Ford to transport students to school. He graduated in 1952 from Farson High School and helped his father farm before being drafted into the U.S. Army. During his time in the Army, he spent time in Texas and Germany. After serving in the military, he returned to his home near Martinsburg where he farmed with his father.
Larry served on two farm service boards, Big 3 of Fairfield and the Mahaska Farm Service of Oskaloosa. After raising their children, Larry and Margaret enjoyed taking many trips and they enjoyed square-dancing. Together they actively attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hedrick and then later at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ottumwa when the churches merged.
Larry loved farming with his son, Randy. John Deere equipment could always be found on the farm. He retired from farming in 2018, when he and Margaret moved to Ottumwa.
Surviving is his wife, Margaret; two children, Gary Schweitzer of Moline, IL and Randy (Jayne) Schweitzer of Hedrick; five grandchildren, Brandi (Brad) Stevens, Jackie Schweitzer, Brian Schweitzer all of Hedrick, Lindsay Spencer of Ottumwa and Brandon Spencer of Centerville; two great grandchildren, Hunter Stevens and MaKinzee Stevens; two sisters, Norma Webb of Broomfield, CO and Alta Mitchell of Ankeny.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Russell Schweitzer; a daughter, Laura Spencer.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 2nd at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 3rd at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa. For those unable to attend, you may watch the service live on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
