Larry E. Countryman, age 84, of Birmingham, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025, at home surrounded by his family.
Born on June 22, 1941 in Birmingham, Larry was a lifelong farmer whose dedication to the land and his family defined his life. In 1962, he married the love of his life, Bette J. Dille, and together they shared 63 years of marriage filled with hard work, laughter, and love.
Larry was known for his unwavering work ethic, quick wit, and love of life. He had a profound love for the outdoors—whether quietly observing a robin’s nest from its first twig to the moment the fledglings took flight, or spending cherished time hunting, fishing, and sharing stories with his family, friends, and neighbors.
His garden was a source of pride, especially the tomatoes he nurtured with the same care and patience he gave to everything in life. From sharing knowledge about raising 4-H calves to expertly managing the sale of this year’s herd, Larry had a natural gift for working with cattle. In 2019, the family farm was designated a Century Farm.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Lisa Countryman of Salem, Alabama, and Sarah Ledger (Greg) of Brighton, and grandsons Tristan Ledger of Birmingham and Elan Ledger of Lincoln, Nebraska.
He is preceded in death by an infant son, his parents, Donnell (Butch) and Ruth Countryman, and brothers Harold and Jerry.
A memorial service to celebrate his life was held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at the Cranston Family Funeral Home in Keosauqua, IA with Chaplain Don Combs officiating. A visitation was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at the funeral home and lasted until the time of service. Burial will be held privately in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Larry's honor may be made out to the Larry Countryman Memorial to be divided between the Maple Hill Cemetery Association, Stockport Fire and EMS, Birmingham Fire Dept., and Keosauqua Fire Dept. and may be mailed c/o Cranston Family Funeral Home, P.O.
