Larry E. Wimmer was born on September 30, 1954, in Ottumwa, IA to Harry and Aileen Hall Wimmer. He attended Ottumwa High School and shortly after married Gina Teeter. The two later divorced and in June of 1975 he met Sue Pool and after a whirlwind romance they married four months later. The two were married for 25 years and even though they divorced they remained close friends. Together they were the proud parents of three boys, Wayne, Chris, and Damien.
Larry had a great work ethic and began working at a young age for a lawn service in Ottumwa before going to Universal Rundle and then Fairfield Engineering until its closing. He spent a brief time working for BRB rural water before finding his dream job as a truck driver. It was truly what he was meant to do. He spent over a decade as a long-haul truck driver, working many of those years in team driving with Sue. They would travel from one side of the country to the other, always making sure their delivery arrived safe and on time. Larry was a skilled driver and could maneuver his truck into any location that was needed for delivery. Eventually the long days away brought him back home where he hauled federal mail for several years before beginning his job with Nutrien Ag where he was also a truck driver. He was a dedicated employee for Nutrien up until his health would no longer allow.
Larry was a huge WWF/WWE fan. He never missed an opportunity to watch it on TV supporting his favorite wrestlers. He and Sue spent many years attending music concerts, including his annual trip with the three boys to St. Louis for a music festival. On one occasion they had a chance to see Elvis in Des Moines, but Larry told Sue that she could “see him next time” and they went to Ted Nugent instead. Two weeks later, Elvis passed away and Larry never heard the end of it from Sue. Larry never missed an opportunity to enjoy Sue’s BBQ and comfort food. Larry cared deeply for his family. A perfect example is when Ian turned 15 and got his school permit. He asked Grandpa Larry how much it would cost to buy the car. Grandpa Larry said, “how much money to you have in your wallet” to which Ian pulled out money and began counting. Larry looked at him and said, “How about you give me a dollar, and it is yours.” Ian bought his very first car for a dollar…a dollar Larry kept proudly in his truck for years. Larry found peace when on the open road with his Harley and enjoyed riding every chance he got. He will be fondly remembered by his family and the many friends he made along the way.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law, Maxine Salts and a brother-in-law, Steven B. Pool.
Left to share his story are his children, Wayne (Deb) Pool of Fairfield, Chris Wimmer of Fairfield, and Damien Wimmer of Fairfield; a bonus daughter, Amanda Moreno of Clive, IA; six grandchildren, Ashley (Dawson) Abiley, Brenden Pool, Lanie Wimmer, Ian Wimmer (Nevaeh Irvine), Wayne Wimmer, and Emma Harris (Noah Schwarting); a great-granddaughter, Bella; girlfriend, Melody Headley, as well as many extended family and friends.
