Laura Ann "Laurie" Shalla, 57, of Waukee, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals following a two-year battle with cancer.
Celebration of Life services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2022, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa. Calling hours will begin at 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Drake University or the Holden Cancer Center at the University of Iowa Hospital. Laurie was born May 1, 1964, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Larry Dwane and Barbara Elizabeth (Shannon) Shalla. She graduated from Washington High School in 1982 and graduated from Drake University in 1986. She was a proud Alumnus and supporter of Drake University.
Laurie lived in Redondo Beach, California, for 25 years before moving back to Iowa in 2020. She previously lived in Boston, Massachusetts. Laurie worked as a Technical Writer and Corporate Trainer for many media, communications, pharmaceutical and banking companies. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved traveling, especially to her home in her heart, the island of Hawaii.
She is survived by her sister, Beth Stuck and husband Steve of Adel, Iowa; sister, Pam Newman and husband Don of Washington, Iowa; two nieces, Meghan and Sarah Newman; and special friend, Vicky Morales of Los Angeles, California, who dedicated the last six months to help the family care for Laurie so she could remain at home.
Laurie was preceded in death by her parents and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
