LaVern Dale Miller Sr. of Kalona was born January 13, 1947, in Iowa City, the son of Mahlon A. and Clara (Coblentz) Miller. He was united in marriage to Leora C. Miller on June 27, 1968, in Goshen, IN. To this union they were blessed with five children. He lived in the Kalona community until moving to Indiana, Virginia, and back to the Kalona area in 1974. He worked for the University of Iowa as a custodian. LaVern was a member of the Zion Christian Fellowship. He enjoyed building and playing the mountain dulcimer, his dogs, gardening, and being with family. LaVern passed away Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 75.

He is survived by his wife Leora, five children, Luke Adam Miller of Ottumwa, Lee Sanford Miller of San Antonio, TX, Vern Dale Miller Jr. (Amy) of Washington, Lonnie Phillip Miller of Story City and Lisa Elaine Helmuth (Loren) of Kalona; 22 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and a sister, Anna Fern King (John) of Kalona. He was preceded in death by his parents, and Sister Alta Marie Miller.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 am Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Officiating will be Elvin Martin. Burial will be at Peter Miller Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be 2-8 with family present 2-4 and 6-8 on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Sunnyside Mennonite Church. A general memorial fund has been established.
