Lee Goodlander, 86, left

his family and friends Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Fayetteville, Ark. A private graveside service and interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington at a later date.

Lee was born June 23, 1933, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Max and Lora Jemima (Rees) Goodlander. He graduated from Washington High School and attended the University of Iowa with a major in art. Lee served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of corporal during the Korean War era from 1952-55. He was stationed in Fort Riley, Kan., Presidio Army base in Monterey, Calif., and later at Fort Bragg, N.C.

On July 14, 1953, Lee married Margery Joann Wieland at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. They moved to Ontario, Calif., in 1957 where Lee worked as a fuel transport driver for the Ontario Airport and later as a firefighter for the city of Ontario. He attended art school at night, hoping one day to work as an artist for Disney.

Lee returned to Washington, Iowa, in 1963 to be with family. He worked for Culligan Water, the Captain's Table, and later as an assistant manager and then manager of Washington Lumber Co. until its closing in the '80s. Lee then returned to California and worked for Escondido Lumber and Home Depot after his retirement. In January 2002, he moved to Fayetteville, Ark., where he could be close to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lee loved fishing, camping, art and photography. He captured many great moments on his camping trips to Zion, Lake Tahoe and Arches. He was always quick with a comeback and never knew a stranger. Lee would know your whole life story in 10 minutes while standing in line at the checkout lane. His great sense of humor and quick wit was one of the many things his family loved and will miss.

He is survived by his daughter, Vicki McFarland and husband Mike of Washington; son, James Goodlander and wife Debra, who was his special caregiver these past months, of Fayetteville; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, John Goodlander and wife Yun of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Max and Lora (Rees) Goodlander; his wife, Margery, in 2013; and his brother, Joe Melvin, in 2017.
