Leo Edward Peiffer, age 83, of Washington, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Halcyon House in Washington while under the care of Hospice of Washington County.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Chuck Adam officiating. Calling hours will begin 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County or St. James Catholic Church.
Leo was born June 10, 1942, the first-born son of Ralph and Mary (Sanders) Peiffer on the home farm in Cedar Township of Washington County. Leo attended St. James Elementary school and graduated from Mid-Prairie High School. Following high school, Leo worked construction and at Keating Steel in Washington. Leo was married to Patricia Batterson on March 2, 1968, and were later divorced. To this union four children were born, Jay, Michael, Jane and RaeAnne. Leo was a farmer most of his life and began concrete construction in the 1980’s. In 2002, Leo and his oldest son, Jay, formed J & L Construction LLC operating as a commercial concrete contractor still in operation today.
Faith, family and farming were an important part of Leo’s life along with serving his country by participating in the National Guard. In later years, Leo enjoyed going on tractor rides around Iowa.
He is survived by his loving partner of 29 years, Nancy Wrage, along with his four children; Jay (Cindy) Peiffer of Riverside, Iowa; Michael Peiffer of Florida; Jane Peiffer of Tonapah, Arizona; and RaeAnne Peiffer and significant other Gabe Birdnow of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; as well as grandchildren Matthew Peiffer, Ethan Peiffer Salladay, Madeline Peiffer, Jack Peiffer, Annabelle Peiffer, Christopher Peiffer Birdnow, Ryker Birdnow and Logan Peiffer Birdnow. Leo is also survived by siblings, Mary Ann (Leonard) Drish, Margaret Ledger, Rosalita Wagner, Frances Greiner, Marlene Jackson, Jim (Angie) Peiffer, Rita (Glenn) Beauchamp, Annette (Randy) Manthei, Don (Lorie) Peiffer and brother-in-law, Keith Hora, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Leo is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Mary Peiffer; an infant daughter; sister, Celeste Hora; brother, William Nicholas Peiffer; brothers-in-law, Jim Ledger, Loren Wagner, Robert Greiner and Hobart Jackson.
