Leonard D. Mahan
Leonard D. Mahan, 77, formerly of Brighton, died late Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Sunrise Terrace Nursing Home in Winfield.
A funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain with the Rev. Charles J. Fladung officiating. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton with the family present from 6 p.m. and prayers for a Christian wake beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. Memorials have been established for St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sunrise Terrace Nursing Home and Masses in his memory, and may be left at the funeral home.
Mr. Mahan was born March 3, 1923, in Keokuk County near Thornburg, the son of John Arthur and Lydia E. Coghlan Mahan. He married Thelma F. Schulte on Jan. 15, 1947, in Harper. He grew up in the Thornburg-Sigourney area and attended Sigourney schools. He raised hogs, farmed and worked at Cargill and at McCleery Cummings in Washington until retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of Wayland; eight children, Rusty Mahan of Providence, R.I., David Mahan of Berthoud, Colo., Dennis Mahan of Iowa City, Lyle Mahan of Coppock, Jeff Mahan of Rossville, Ga., Tom Mahan of Tallahassee, Fla., Peggy Jensen of Coralville, and Denise Stauffer of Wayland; a brother, Richard Mahan of North English; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and seven brothers.
