LeRoy Gene VanAuken, age 83 of Columbus Junction, died Saturday March 16, 2019 at Colonial Manor. The son of Glen LeRoy and Lenore (Morse) VanAuken, he was born September 9, 1935 in Louisa County. On January 12, 1963 he married Sharon Crile at Mt. Pleasant; she died August 28, 2014.

He was a 1953 graduate of Cotter High School. He served in the Army from 1958-60. He was a farm hand for Tom Gipple for 27 years and worked in housekeeping at the University of Iowa Hospital for 7 years.

He enjoyed refinishing furniture, following grandkids activities, and reading.

Survivors include; one daughter Jacqueline (Mike) Chaney of Columbus Junction; one son Kevin (Nicki) Van Auken of Des Moines; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two brothers, Larry of Milan, Illinois and Ronnie of Winfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

The funeral service will be Wednesday March 20, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 prior to the service. Interment will be at the Columbus City Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Iowa City Hospice.
