Lloyd E. Lee, 90, of Salem, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2020, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Lloyd was born July 3, 1929, in Henry County, the youngest of nine children to John and Pearl (Schultz) Lee. He was united in marriage to Meralene Bailey on March 5, 1955, at the Salem Friends Church. Lloyd attended Salem High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 at Fort Campbell Kentucky. He was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged in 1952 at Fort Benning, Ga. Lloyd worked for R.W. Foss Electric Light and Power Co. until it was sold. In 1958, he started working for Continental Telephone Co. While he was employed for them, he went through many different name changes and several different locations throughout the state of Iowa. In 1984, he moved back to Salem.
After his retirement in 1983 from the telephone company, he worked for a company burying cable for a few years then he went to work for the maintenance shop at Iowa Wesleyan College until 1988. Lloyd served on different fire departments in communities he lived in, but served in the Salem Fire Department until his health failed. He coached his children in baseball and softball and helped with Boy Scouts. He had three grandsons who are Eagle Scouts. He was a life ime member of the Pioneer Telephone Organization and the American Legion Post No. 94. Lloyd enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking projects and watching NASCAR racing, his favorite driver was Dale Earnhart. Lloyd and his wife enjoyed camping in Arbela, Mo., for many years. Over the years, they traveled to several states along with Germany visiting their son Brian and family who was in the Air Force. In 1998, they started to winter in Panama City Beach, Fla., and continued this trip until 2020.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Meralene of Salem; his children, Kent (Lorrie) Lee of Mount Pleasant, Brian (Cleo) Lee of Lynn Haven, Fla., Connie (Wendell) Edgington of Fort Madison, Cindy (Terry) Perrott of Rome, Ga., and Diane (Marvin) May of Mount Pleasant; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildrenl and three great-great-grandchildren.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Nichols Perrott; three brothers, Harry Lee, Elmer Lee and Junior Lee; and five sisters, Irene Bailey, Dorothy Swan, Opal Johnson, Wilma Mabeus and Evelyn Bell.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the Salem East Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 5, at Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The family will not be present. Military honors will be conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard and Fireman's Honors will be conducted by the Southeast Iowa Regional Fire Honor Guard. Memorials may be directed to the Salem Fire and Rescue, Salem Veterans Memorial and to Great Rive Hospice House in his memory.
