Logan L. Heilman, 77, of Iowa City, passed away unexpectedly July 31, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He had been in declining health in recent years.
Logan Lee Heilman was born in Washington, Iowa, on Nov. 11, 1943, the son of Logan T. and Wilma (Cross) Heilman. He attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School in 1962, where he played varsity football and was a member of the National Honor Society.
In 1966, Logan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Iowa. He was a member of the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 and served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the University of Iowa and received a Master of Arts degree in English Literature.
In 1970, Logan was joined in marriage with Judy Rae Salladay of Washington. They moved to Keokuk, Iowa, where he taught English and literature at Southeastern Community College. While there, he created one of the first undergraduate courses dedicated to the academic study of science-fiction and fantasy literature. He also volunteered his time to teach a creative writing course for inmates at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison.
Logan later returned to Washington, where he was a metallurgical analyst at Crane Company for many years. After retirement, he remained in Washington before moving to the Walden Place community in Iowa City.
Logan is survived by his son, Jason (Tiiki) of Valrico, Fla.; and Jason's mother, Judy R. Salladay Heilman of Tiffin, Iowa; brothers, Mark and James, both of Purcellville, Va.; nieces, Heidi and Britt; nephews, Mathew and Jeremy; great-nieces, Ashley, Sarah, Inara and Kyra; and great-nephew, Benjamin.
