Lucy Belle Cheyney, 97, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, January 3, 2022, at Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2022, at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Calling hours will begin
9 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church where the family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Services will be livestreamed on the Jones & Eden Facebook page. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the First Baptist Church or Hospice Compassus. Lucy was born February 5, 1924, in New Town, Missouri, the daughter of Aaron H. and Leona M. (Sinclair) Summy. She graduated from New Town High School in 1941. Lucy was united in marriage to Robert J. Cheyney on February 16, 1943, at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Lucy grew up in Missouri and had lived in Colorado prior to moving to Washington, Iowa, in the early 1950s. She lived for a short time in Muscatine and Bellevue, Iowa. Lucy worked as a greeter at Wal Mart for 24 years retiring in 2014.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Washington and had previously been a member of the First Christian Church where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School Classes for many years, and served on the board of the Disciples of Christ Church.
She is survived by her son, Robert Sinclair Cheyney and wife Kathy of North Liberty, Iowa; daughter, Pamela Sue Hartsock and husband Edward of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Elizabeth Ellen Hixson and husband Gary of Knoxville, Tennessee; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, John Summy of Florida; and one sister, Mary Ellen Sapp of Ottumwa, Iowa.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Cheyney; brother, Jim Lee Summy; and infant twin daughters, Sally and Sue Cheyney.
