Lyle Johnston

Lyle Dean Johnston, 87, of Washington, died Monday, June 22, 2015, in All American Care Center in Washington.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 24, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington with the Rev. Maureen Howard officiating. A general memorial fund has been established. The Beatty Funeral Home in Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnston was born Nov. 6, 1927, in Burlington, the son of Roy M. and Mildred (Rodgers) Johnston.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. He worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown for 10 years and farmed by Stockport for 14 years. He was a member of the VFW and the Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Becky Garland of Farmer City, Ill., and Rosanne Avery and husband Allen of Burlington; two grandchildren; and one sister, Lealta McGregor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dennis Johnston; one daughter, Julie Johnston; one son-in-law, Vearl Garland; two brothers, Cleo, and Don Johnston; and three sisters, Rita Gillis, Arlene Mumme, and Evelyn Morrison.
