KALONA ? M. Maxine Miller, 94, of Kalona, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at her home.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at the United Christian and Baptist Church in Kalona with the Rev. Dennis Arnold officiating. Private family burial was held prior to the service. Visitation was from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Historical Society.
Mrs. Miller was born April 6, 1921, in Inman, Kansas, the daughter of Amos and Cora (Zimmerman) Yoder. She married J. Claude Miller on June 16, 1940, at the Daytonville Mennonite Church.
She graduated from high school in Hesston, Kansas, and later in life from Mercy School of Nursing. She and her husband farmed west of Wellman, where they raised their six children. After many years of farming, she realized her dream vocation as a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse at Mercy Hospital and then served as the director of nursing at Pleasantview Home. After retirement, she and her husband managed the Kalona Golf Club. She also worked as a tour guide for the Kalona Historical Society. She was a member of the United Christian and Baptist Church and the Idris Club of Kalona. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing golf and spending time with her family. She was an avid Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinal fan.
Surviving are four sons, Jarold Miller and Ann Scruggs of Hot Springs, Arkansas, James Miller and wife Pam of Dubuque, Duane Miller and wife Bev of Anderson, California, and K. Dean Miller and wife Dorothy of Kalona; one son-in-law, Dave Zahradnek of Kalona; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Madelene Gregor of Holiday, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Amos, and Cora; her stepmother, Mattie Ann Yoder; her husband, J. Claude, in December 2004; one son, David Miller; one daughter, Claudine Miller-Zahradnek; one daughter-in-law, Linda Miller; one grandson; one great-great-granddaughter; and two brothers, Merle, and Mervin Yoder.
