M. Phyllis Nelson

M. Phyllis Magnuson Nelson, 89, formerly of Burlington, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Pleasant Manor Care Center.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, March 28, in Lunning Chapel, with family present at 1 p.m. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Rodney Underwood officiating. Burial will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Messiah Lutheran Church.

She was born Aug. 7, 1918, the daughter of Varner and Eleanor Nelson Magnuson. On April 5, 1942, she married LeRoy L. Nelson.

A graduate of Burlington High School and the Burlington Business School, she worked as a secretary prior to her marriage and again later in life, retiring from the Des Moines County Visiting Nurses. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the King's Daughters Group.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Mattix and her husband Dean of Oskaloosa and Kathy Young and her husband Stan of Mt. Pleasant; her son, Jim Nelson and his wife Jennifer of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a son-in-law, Bob Hiller of Burlington; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Her parents, parents-in-law, husband, sister-in-law Lillian Nelson, and daughter Janet Hiller preceded her in death.
