Mabel Collins
Mabel Collins, 90, of Mt. Pleasant died at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at the Henry County Health Center.
The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Weir Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. Kiboko I. Kiboko officiating. Interment will be in the Pleasant Point Cemetery, west of Oakland Mills. Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 7, at the Weir Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. that evening. A memorial has been established to the Pleasant Point Cemetery.
Miss Collins was born Dec. 29, 1909, near New London, to John Harvey and Myrtle Woodson Collins. She graduated from the Mt. Pleasant Community High School and graduated Cum Laude from Parsons College in Fairfield with a B.A. Degree in Education. She took post-graduate work at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and at Gregg College in Chicago, Ill. She was Office Secretary for the Southeast Iowa Council of Boy Scouts of America in Burlington for several years. She was Secretary to the Inspector General of the U.S. Army at the I.A.A.P. in Middletown during WWII. She taught business classes at several high schools, retiring from Mt. Pleasant Community High School in 1972. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant and a charter member of the Henry County Retired Teachers Association. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Pleasant Point Cemetery Association since 1963. She was a member of the Henry County Republican Women, the Mt. Pleasant Women's Club, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Wesleyan Service Guild, the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, and the Alpha Iota sorority.
Survivors include two sisters, Helen Robertson of Mt. Pleasant and June C. Klopfenstein of Aurora, Colo.; three brothers, John W. Collins of Douglas, Ariz., Frank R. Collins of Bellevue, Wash., and Jackson H. Collins of Des Moines; 21 nieces and nephews; 30 great-nieces and nephews; six step-great-nieces and nephews; and 30 great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Flora Kracht.
