Marcellus J. 'Bode' Bodensteiner
Marcellus J. "Bode" Bodensteiner, 98, of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at the Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Center in San Juan Capistrano. A funeral Mass is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Cedar Rapids. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Stewart Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, with a rosary service at 12:30 p.m.
Marcellus was born, Jan. 8, 1909, in St. Lucas, the son of Joseph and Margaret Drilling Bodensteiner, the second of 11 children. He grew up on a farm near Ossian, and attended St. Francis de Sales School in Ossian, Decorah public school and Iowa State University.
He married Ann Fanning in Iowa City May 5, 1936. They were parents of three children - Hugh, Mike and Mary. He lived for many years in Cedar Rapids and Earlville and lived the last 13 years in San Juan Capistrano. He worked as a dairy inspector for 30 years.
He was devoted to his family and enjoyed playing golf and fishing, following the stock market and watching baseball and football.
Survivors include his sons, Hugh (Karen) Bodensteiner of Darlington, Wisc., and Mike of San Juan Capistrano; his daughter Mary (Daryl) Shy, of Mt. Pleasant; his grand daughter Elizabeth of Chicago; his sisters, Evelyn Hawkins of Ossian, Olivia Everett of Fayette and Lucille Fanning of Baltimore, Md.; his brothers, Father Peter Bodensteiner of Lawler, and Cletus Bodensteiner of Long Beach, Calif.
Marcellus was preceded in death by his wife, an infant son, brothers Chris, Leonard, Hugo, Leo and his sister Agnes Winter.
