Margaret Gwen Dunn, age 91, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Halcyon House in Washington.
Private family services will be held Friday, October 4, at Elm Grove Cemetery with Pastor Anthony Devaughn officiating. Calling hours will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorials have been established for Halcyon House. Margaret was born September 29, 1932, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Grace (Jones) Brown. She graduated from Burlington High School, and earned a degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Iowa in 1954.
Margaret began her career as an elementary school teacher before dedicating herself to raising her two sons. During this time, she and her family lived in various states, including Illinois, Nebraska, California, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. In 1990, Jim and Margaret retired to Washington to manage the family farm operation and became active members in the community.
Margaret met her husband, Jim, while in junior high school, and they were united in marriage on January 15, 1955. They remained inseparable for almost 70 beautiful years. Margaret was the support and engine of her family, unwavering in her love. She lived her life full of pride, not for herself, but for her husband, children, and grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons, David (Karen) Dunn of Hudson, New Hampshire; and Mark (Christine) Dunn of Washington, Iowa; four grandchildren: Kelly (Peter) Zamachaj of Litchfield, New Hampshire; Matthew Dunn and fiancé, Tess St. James, of Franklin, Tennessee; Katharine Dunn of Rochester, Minnesota; and Michael Dunn of Washington, Iowa; two great-grandchildren: Andrew and Jonathan Zamachaj.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, on September 18, 2024, and by her parents.
