Marie D. Thornton

Marie D. Thornton, 90, of Mt. Pleasant died Sunday, March 19, 2000, in the New London Care Center.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 24, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Her body will lie in state from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at the Gathering Center of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. The Scripture Service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the Gathering Center, where the family will receive friends. There will be no visitation at the Beatty Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church or the Southeast Iowa Crossroads Hospice.

Mrs. Thornton was born Nov. 3, 1909, in St. Paul, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Rickelman Klesner. She married Ralph Edward Thornton on April 7, 1931, in Monmouth, Ill. She was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and was employed as a cook at the Henry County Health Center. She enjoyed raising African violets.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanette Luithly of Columbus Junction and Joann Mallams of Mt. Pleasant; two sons, Donald W. and Larry E. Thornton, both of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Wilford Klesner of St. Paul; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two infant grandsons; one sister, Marcella; and a brother, Raymond.
