Mark E. Shellmyer
Columbus Junction
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mark Edward Shellmyer. Born in Burlington, Iowa, on Oct. 1, 1976, to Bob and Norma Jean Shellmyer, Mark grew up surrounded by love and nature in rural Columbus Junction, Iowa. He attended Columbus Community Schools before continuing his education at Bethel College (St. Paul, MN), Culver-Stockton College (Canton, MO) and University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA). With his love of learning, he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration, a Master’s in Business Administration and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration before landing a prestigious fellowship with the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Mark’s career in healthcare administration led him to management and executive positions in Michigan, Miami, Chicago, Washington, Georgia and Florida, where he not only impacted organizations but made lifelong connections. Mark met few strangers, rather welcoming the opportunity to create new friendships. He saw the good in all, and loved and helped others without judgment.
And while his professional career was fulfilling, the title that he carried most proudly was that of “father” to Evan Grey Shellmyer – his greatest gift. Whether fishing, golfing or catching up on FaceTime, Mark was happiest when with or talking to Evan, who inherited his father’s athleticism, love of all things Iowa Hawkeyes and sweet smile.
Mark departed this earthly life on Thursday, May 26, 2022, after an illness. In addition to his loving son and parents, he leaves a host of aunts, uncles, dear friends, former colleagues and teammates to mourn his passing and continue his legacy.
While his time on earth seemed far too short, we are comforted by the joy of his memory and the knowing that he is at home and at peace with the Lord. “Father, not my will, but yours be done." Mark 14:36
