Marvin D. Korns, age 86, of Brooklyn, passed away Friday, August 2, 2024, at Unity Point Hospital, Grinnell, IA. A graveside memorial service with inurnment will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn, IA, with Pastor Lisa Whitmarsh Peterson officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S Navy Honor Guard and the Brooklyn American Legion Post #294. The family requests any monetary contributions be sent to First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, IA or the Poweshiek County Ambulance. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is assisting the family with arrangements.
Marvin Delno Korns was born on the family farm in Brooklyn, IA on September 24, 1937, to Nelson Roland Korns and Celia Kathryn Gritsch Korns. Marvin attended and graduated from Hartwick Schools in 1956. After farming with his brother, Charlie, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1958-59. When his father became ill, he returned home and continued working on the family farm. Around this time, he also became a truck driver and drove for Walnut Grove, Oz DeCorte, Brooklyn Elevator, Wayne Kinnaird, Manatts Inc., Farmhand, Lyle Rhoorda, Bertch Cabinets, A1 Fabrication and Glen Berry. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn.
Marvin married Martina Seath on December 16, 1963, at Madison Church of Christ, Brooklyn, IA. They enjoyed 60 wonderful years together. They had two children, Marcea Dawn Korns and Mark Robert Korns.
Marvin had a great sense of humor and liked to tease. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed watching his grandsons and great-nephews play baseball. Marvin was also a fan of the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. In his retirement, he enjoyed watching Westerns, mowing his lawn and completing puzzles. Marvin is being interned with two of his favorite dogs, Scooter and Josh.
Marvin was a lifelong fan of auto racing and NASCAR, having been a winning stock car driver in the 1960’s. He raced in Newton, Des Moines, Iowa Fairgrounds, Eldon, and Oskaloosa, IA. He mainly drove for Dock Blankenship and was the point leader and champion at Oskaloosa in 1965, ‘66 and ‘67. Marvin was also a motorcycle enthusiast and he and Martina had been to forty-four states on their Honda.
Marvin is survived by his wife Martina, of Brooklyn, IA; son Mark Korns, of Brooklyn, NY; two grandsons, Henry Nelson and Hugo William Dawn Korns, of Brooklyn, NY; his sister Berverly Creps, of Grinnell, IA; two sisters-in-law, Marion Korns, of Bella Vista, AK and Sandra Moses of Dubuque, IA; and a brother-in-law, Robert Seath of Englewood, FL. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marcea; his parents; a brother, Charles; a brothers-in-law, Francis Creps and Carl Moses.
