Mary Ellen Wright, age 92, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the Halcyon House.

Celebration of life services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at the Brighton Community Church with Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. General calling hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Brighton First Responders, Brighton Community Church, and the Washington County Fair Association. Mary Ellen was born on January 21, 1931, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Edna (Latta) Wentworth. She attended Walnut Country School, graduating from Brighton High School in 1949. She went on to attend the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, receiving her teaching certificate. She married Earl B. Wright on February 20, 1955, at the Brighton Methodist Church.

She farmed with her husband, Earl in Tipton, Iowa until 1960 and then moved to the family farm in Brighton. Mary Ellen taught school in Bennett, Iowa. She was a member of the Brighton Community Church, Chapter AQ PEO, Farm Bureau Association, and Washington County Pork Producers. In the late 60’s to mid 70’s, Earl and Mary would host, through Farm Bureau, farm trainees from Japan and Poland. She enjoyed working on the farm, animals, gardening, family vacations, bible study, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Mary Ellen is survived by her sons, David B. Wright of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Craig E. Wright and wife Lynn of Brighton, Iowa; grandchildren, Amanda (Tyler) Russell of Brighton, Iowa; Macy (Chris) Hallinan of Waukee, Iowa, and Brett (Hayley) Wright of Brighton, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Kaiden Russell and Wrenlee Wright; brother-in-law, Alvin (Mary) Wright of Tipton, Iowa, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2014; her parents; brother, David Wentworth; sister-in-law, Lillian Wentworth; father-in-law, Boon Wright; mother-in-law, Dorothy Wright, and sister-in-law, Helen Wright.
