Mary Frances Smith, 78, a lifelong resident of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at her home.

Mary Frances Riepe was born on August 24, 1943, the daughter of Ora and Wilma (Brandmeyer) Riepe. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and attended Marycrest College and Burlington Business School. On April 20, 1963, she was united in marriage to Leo Larry Smith and together they raised 6 children. Mary Frances worked for Henry County Farm Bureau for 44 years. She was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church where she was a member of the Alter & Rosary Society for several years. She was also a member of the NU Club and L.B.S. Club, which were neighborhood clubs. She and her husband took their children on many family vacations out west. Mary Frances enjoyed taking pictures of the sunrise, sunset and her flower gardens. She also enjoyed family picnics to Nauvoo, Illinois, at the same picnic table along the Mississippi River for over 50 years.

Mary Frances is survived by her husband, Larry; six children, Christina (Doug) Hoenig of Ames, Brian (Cindy) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Carla Jones of Mt. Pleasant, Sarah (Mike) Jirak of New London, Natalie VanSickle of Mt. Pleasant and Adam (Brooke) Smith of Mt. Pleasant; as well as grandchildren, Aaron (Holly) and Andreas Hoenig, Justin, Cody and Austin Smith, Kaitlin (Randy) Wade and Marcus Jones, Elizabeth (David) Huppenbauer, and Courtney and Delaney Smith. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Abel and Noel Hoenig, Taylor and Junior Wade, and Harper Huppenbauer.

Mary Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, W.J. Riepe; and sons-in-law, John Jones and David VanSickle.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Father Paul Connolly officiating. Memorials may be directed to EveryStep Hospice of Mt. Pleasant or to the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant in her memory.
