Mary G. Coon, age 77, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a fall leading to hip surgery and later cardiac arrest.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Calling hours were held 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family received friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Monday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for Sonshine Outreach of Washington or the American Heart Association. Mary was born December 24, 1946, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Paul F. and Alberta (Godfrey) Evans. Mary graduated from Washington High School in 1965 and was united in marriage to James Coon on July 12, 1969.
Mary and Jim lived in Haskins and Ainsworth, Iowa, while owning and operating Haskins Feed & Grain. In 1987, they moved to Lexington, Iowa.
Mary was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was a talented crafter, creating many gifts out of needlepoint, crochet and plastic canvas. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed collecting cookbooks. Mary enjoyed genealogy and spent countless hours researching family history and collecting printed obituaries for the Washington Genealogical Society.
She will be missed by her husband of 55 years, Jim Coon; brother, Paul Evans; sister, Carol (Dave) Greiner; and brother Tim (Michal) Evans all of Washington, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sisters-in-law, Sharon Evans and Mary Lou Krotz and husband Wilbur; brothers-in-law, Dwayne Shaffer and Rod Raper; and one nephew, Terry Evans.
