Mary Gertude Scott Elliott
Mary Gertude Scott Elliott, 104, of Burlington and formerly of New London, died Wedesday, July 19, 2000, at the Klein Unit of Great River Medical Center in Burlington.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, at Elliott Chapel in New London with the Rev. Tom Henstock officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday with family present. Memorials may be made to New London Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Elliott was born August 26, 1895, north of New London, the daughter of Herbert C. and Hattie Foggy Scott. She married George A. Elliott on June 12, 1923, at her home in New London. She graduated from the eighth grade at the former Bethel School north of New London. She attended Normal School for one summer?s teacher training and taught at Everett Country School at the age of 18, driving a horse and buggy to serve as the only teacher for 14 students. She later attended New London High School from which she graduated in 1914, and was the oldest surviving graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College, graduating in 1919. Her other teaching posts included Sherman School, then Mt. Union, where she taught English and math and served as principal. She later taught at Crawfordsville and Burlington High Schools.
She was very active in her husband?s funeral business, Elliott Chapel of New London, served on the Henry County Board of Education, was an 85 year member of Alpha Xi Delta, Beta Chapter, and was a 78 year member of Chapter E.V. of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 440, the American Legion Auxiliary, and of New London Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Genevieve Lunning and Roberta Peterson of Burlington; and two sons, G.A. Elliott of New London and Scott Elliott of Lakeland, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, and two brothers.
