MARY LEE (KEMPF) VAN EGDON

Mary Lee (Kempf) Van Egdon, 76, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Monday, January 24, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.
Mary was born on May 5, 1945, in Fairfield, the daughter of Harry J. and Beatrice (Godwin) Bekel. She was united in marriage to Earl Kempf and later to Gregory Van Egdon. Mary worked for the Mt. Pleasant Mental Health in the children's area. After the closure in Mt. Pleasant, she transferred to Independence and later to Anamosa, and then to Oakdale as a corrections officer. Once she retired, she worked at Optimae in Washington. Mary had a huge heart and took care of different people who needed help. She raised a huge garden, canned her produce, enjoyed sewing and shopping at Younkers.
Mary is survived by her children, Jackie (Karl) Killion of Farmington, Missouri, Kris (Michelle) Kelley of Crawfordsville, Brooke (Kenneth) McArtor of Mt. Pleasant, Troy (Lisa) Kempf of Olds and Michelle Kempf of Winfield; 12 grandchildren, Branden, Kacey, Tyler, Trever, Justin, Aaron, Tanner, Katelyn, Allie, Kristina and Lilly; 9 great-grandchildren; along with her niece and nephews, Penny, Mike and Jeff; and special cousins, Alan and Linda Coop.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gregory Van Egdon; one grandson, Drew Killion; her sister, Joann Burkey; one niece, Kelly Jo Burkey; and a special aunt, Elsie Zihlman.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Swedesburg Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Youngquist officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery at Brighton. Memorials may be directed to the Swedesburg Lutheran Church or to the Wayland Fire and Rescue in her memory.
