Matthew 'Matt' Charles Schillig Sr.

      KALONA - Matthew "Matt" Charles Schillig Sr., 85, of Riverside, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, in his home in Riverside following a sudden illness.

      Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona, with the Rev. Michael Lynch and the Rev. Rich Adam officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Vincent's Cemetery, Riverside. Military honors will be given by the Riverside VFW at the graveside. A memorial fund has been established.

      Mr. Schillig was born Nov. 19, 1922, the son of Zeno and Isabelle (McManus) Schillig. He married Betty Pokorny on June 7, 1947, in Moline, Ill.

      He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946. He was a mechanic. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Iowa City and was interested in the project to save the Old English River Bridge.
