Mattie H. Bender

      KALONA - Mattie H. Bender, 87, of Kalona, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, from pneumonia.

      A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Kalona Mennonite Church in Kalona, with the Rev. Scott Swartzendruber, the Rev. Mick Murray, and the Rev. Marvin E. Bender officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Visitation will begin at 7 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. The family will be present from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund for the Kalona First Responders has been established.

      Mrs. Bender was born Oct. 17, 1916, to Harvey C. and Mary (Fry) Miller in Haven, Kan. She married to Ivan Bender on Dec. 16, 1941.
