Maurine Roberts, age 89, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2025, at Halcyon House.

Celebration of life services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Pastor Anthony DeVaughn officiating. The family will be present to receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the church. Interment will take place at Oregon Township Cemetery. Maurine was born August 27, 1935, in Ainsworth, Iowa, the daughter of Gene and Ethel (Martin) Stephens. She graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1953 and graduated from Cornell College Teacher’s College in 1955. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1979. Maurine was united in marriage to Dale Eugene Roberts on June 24, 1956, in Ainsworth. Dale and Maurine were married for 68 years and were as close as two people can be.

Maurine worked as a substitute teacher in Ainsworth, Washington, and Columbus Junction for many years. She later joined the Washington Community District, serving as a junior high language arts teacher for several years. Maurine was a devoted member of the Ainsworth Methodist Church and later the Washington United Methodist Church. An accomplished pianist, she played both piano and organ for church services, as well as numerous weddings and funerals, beginning at age 15 until age 86. Maurine was also an active member of Sacha Club, Questers, and P.E.O.

She is survived by her son, Tim Roberts and wife Criss of Ainsworth, Iowa; son, Eric Roberts of Ainsworth, Iowa; daughter, Kathy Jurgenson and husband Tim of El Paso, Texas; son-in-law, Tim Dempsey of Urbandale, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Peg Stephens of Washington, Iowa; and Janel Stephens of Tipton, Iowa.

Maurine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale in 2023; daughter, Jill Dempsey; sister, Kathy Holthaus and brothers Dave Stephens and James Stephens.
