FAIRFIELD ? Max E. Hollander, 95, of Fairfield, died Friday, April 7, 2017, in Sunset Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, at First Lutheran Church, 201 W. Briggs Avenue in Fairfield, with the Rev. Greg Friedrich officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday at the church. Burial with military rites will be at Fairfield Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salina Cemetery Association or First Lutheran Church of Fairfield. Condolences may be sent to Mary Ann Young or Karen Bush at 2835 Salina Rd., Fairfield, IA 52556.
Mr. Hollander was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Salina, the son of Paul Clifford and Irene Eveline (Hillman) Hollander. He married his high school sweetheart, Maizie Berg, on Feb. 18, 1943.
He was a 1939 graduate of Fairfield High School. He honorably served his country from 1942-45 in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, constructing airstrips. He received four Bronze Battle Stars and 11 Victory Medals. His lifelong patriotism is evidenced by his commitment to local veterans groups. For over 30 years he continued the bond among fellow comrades through reunions of the 843rd Army Engineer Aviation Battalion. In 2009 he participated on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He and his wife took great pride in being stewards of the land on their Century Farm operation, where three generations of Hollanders have farmed for more than 127 years. He and his wife also worked side by side for 55 years to build a successful agency, Hollander Insurance, founded on providing the best customer service while meeting risk management needs of their customers. He was a dedicated public servant through board membership on Access Energy Cooperative for 27 years, Soil Conservation District for 25 years, Jefferson County Hospital (5 years) Jefferson County Mutual Insurance, was a charger member of the Fairfield Kiwanis Club, and a lifetime member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He was a member of Clara Lutheran Church of Salina, the first Lutheran Church of Fairfield, and served on the Salina Cemetery Board. He was known for his kind and generous spirit, his love of country, his land stewardship and his commitment to carry on his father?s legacy to service the insurance needs of many in the community.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ann Young and husband Bill of Des Moines, and Karen Bush of Ankeny; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and two great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Maizie Berg Hollander, in 2005; his parents; one brother, Paul Hollander Jr.; one nephew; one son-in-law, Michael Bush; and one grandson.
