Max W. Owens, former resident and businessman of Washington, Iowa, passed away May 22, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society in Oakes, N.D.

He was born March 27, 1927, at Cotter, Iowa, to Clarence and Twila (McNeill) Owens. He attended Ainsworth High School. Max served his country in the U.S. Army in 1945 and 1946. In 1948, he married Laurine Kiesey and together they had a son, Mark, and daughter, Linda. Max owned and operated the State Cafe and later the Captains Table in Washington, Iowa. He married Shirley Walgamuth on June 30, 1978. They made their home in Ottumwa, Iowa, where Max worked at Indian Hills Community College until his retirement. His family has wonderful memories of him boating, fishing and watching sports.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Mark (Nancy) Owens and their son, Jason and great-grandson, AJ; daughter, Linda Castino (Bob) Stange; stepson, Justin (Charlee) Walgamuth and their children, Zoe and Eli; and a sister Fern Mendenhall.

Max was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne.

A private interment will be held at a later date at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes, N.D., is in charge of the arrangements.
