MELVIN R. MAEDER
Richland
Melvin R. Maeder, 79, of Richland, died at the Jefferson County Health Center, surrounded by his family, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 25, 2021. He was born Feb. 18, 1942, in Melrose Park, Ill., the son of Glendon R. Maeder and Velda L. (Johnson, Klingaman) Maeder. Mel grew up in Wood Dale and Skokie, Ill., returning every summer to the farm, located north of Richland, Iowa, owned by his Aunt and Uncle Beulah and Willard Reighard. He graduated from Richland High School and attended Iowa State University.
Mel and Judy Maeder were married on May 30, 1964. They began their married life on the farm, having four children and attending Hopewell Friends Church. They later owned and operated Maeder's Mill in Richland. Mel also worked at Dexter Manufacturing in Fairfield, and later managed USDA housing communities in Southeast Iowa. In addition, Mel served in the 224th Engineer Battalion and Camp Dodge Training Center of the Iowa Army National Guard, including active duty deployment during Desert Storm. He retired from the Guard after 22 years as Master Sergeant.
Faith and family were the most important things in life to Mel. A man of gentleness, kindness and integrity, he always had a smile and an encouraging word to share. He was an active member of Woolson Friends Church, American Legion Post 504 and Richland Masonic Lodge No. 38. He loved fishing, spending time with family and attending the school and various activities of his grandchildren.
He is survived by four children, Jeff (Linda) of Columbus Junction, Nancy (Amy Anderson) of Durham, N.C., Daniel (Angela) of Bloomfield and Jason of Liberty, Mo.; six grandchildren, Elise, Avery, Mary (Sean) Kuhl, Hunter (Erica), Carson and Cora; three great-grandchildren, Brynlei, Adrian and Brooks Kuhl; and his brother, Don Maeder of Romeoville, Ill.
Mel was preceded in death by his wife, Judy; his parents; and brothers, Bill Klingaman and Ken Maeder.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at Woolson Friends Church, south of Richland. Family will greet friends for visitation between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 30, at the church. Military rites will be conducted at Woolson Church immediately following the service.
Memorials to Woolson Friends Church, Jefferson County Health Center Auxiliary or American Legion Post 504 and may be left at the church or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 301, Richland, IA 52585. Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
