Michael “Mike” L. Maschmann went to meet his Lord and Savior on August 21, 2024, at the age of 78 years. He passed away at his home under the care of Essence of Life Hospice. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 24, 2024, St. James Lutheran Church, Victor, Iowa with Pastor Michael Kolesar officiating. Burial is in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery with military honors. The family received friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, August 23, 2024, at Kloster Funeral Home in Brooklyn. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. James Lutheran Church, the BGM Booster Club or the Brooklyn-Victor Country Club. Kloster Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Mike is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ellen; his daughter Molly Tompkins and her children Abby and Ashley, and their father Jeremy; his son Matthew (Jennifer), and children Madison and Mason, along with their mother Heather; bonus grandchildren, Saphire, Riley, Maddux, and Huxley. Also surviving are a sister Linda, brothers, Kenny, and Bud (Pam), sister-in-law Edie Kuntz, brother-in-law Ray Micheel, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jerry and Bob, sister Kathy, brother in law Corky, sisters in law Carol, Debbie, and Marsha and nephew Scott.
Michael Lee Maschmann was born June 10, 1946, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Frank and Katie Cox Maschmann. He attended the BGM schools graduating with the Class of 1964. He participated in several activities including football, baseball, and basketball where he excelled in all. Mike served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-1985, retiring as a Master Sergeant, working in the Radar Maintenance field. While stationed in Germany he participated with the Hattenhof Fussball Team, which was the village they lived in at the time. Mike and Mary Ellen Stoker were married June 26, 1971, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Victor.
After retiring from the Air Force, Mike hauled milk for Merle Hall Trucking, worked as an electrician for Collum Electric, worked as a maintenance man at Holiday Lake, and he spent his last years of employment hauling seed for Moon Seed in rural Brooklyn and hauled cattle all over the United States for many local farmers. Mike also spent his fall seasons trucking grain from the fields. When he wasn’t busy at work, he was always there to lend a hand to family, neighbors and strangers alike for anything that needed to be done.
He enjoyed watching college football, major league baseball and NASCAR. He spent many hours playing cards and golfing. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church where he served on the finance committee for several years and as a trustee for three years. He also was a member of the American Legion and participated in the 1 million Veterans Research Program.
