Mildred L. “Mid” Thomas, age 84, of Washington, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the United Presbyterian Home following a decline in health.

The family will be present to receive friends and celebrate Mid’s life from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa. Memorials have been established to Paws and More Animal Shelter in Washington. Mid was born December 4, 1939, in Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of Martial and Esther (Stump) Crossett. She graduated from Washington High School in 1958 and married her soulmate Gary Thomas that same year, spending 65 years by his side. Mid spent several years as an insurance agent at Westermark and Seller’s Insurance in Washington, and enjoyed all the people she was able to assist during that time.

Though small in stature, Mid’s heart was boundless. She was a loving mother and devoted grandmother to her two grandchildren, hand drawing them coloring pages as children and sending care packages and lending a listening ear as they grew older. Mid was a wonderful cook, welcoming the whole family each Saturday to her table for over 20 years. She could often be found playing word games in her spot on the couch with her cat by her side or enjoying a Sunday drive with Gary around the countryside. Mid knew no stranger. She was warm and thoughtful to all she met. She was immensely talented and creative, writing, painting, and sewing in her free time. She will be sorely missed by all those who had the opportunity to know and love her.

Mid is survived by her husband Gary Thomas of Washington, Iowa; son, Lyle Thomas and wife Tina of Washington, Iowa; two grandchildren: Leslie Holt and husband Brett of Overland Park, Kansas; Cole Thomas and Lindsay Ullyot of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and two great-grandchildren, Landreigh and Baker Holt. She is also survived by her brother, Duane Crossett and wife Louie of Columbus Junction, Iowa; sister-in-law, Delores Crossett of New London, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Mid was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Laura Leigh; and siblings: Gary Crossett, Linda Kleese, Doug Crossett, Tom Crossett and twin sisters in infancy.
