Mildred May (Lewis) Houseal, 100, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa.
Celebration of life services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2022 at the United Presbyterian Church
in Washington with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke and Pastor Erin Kaye officiating. The family will be present to receive friends at the United Presbyterian Church from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Friday. Private family interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington prior to the Celebration of Life service. Memorials have been established for the Activity Department at the United Presbyterian Home or Hospice of Washington County. Mildred was born March 21, 1922, in Washington County, Iowa, the daughter of John Wesley and Myrtle May (Young) Meyer. She graduated from Washington High School in 1940 and attended Washington Junior College for one year. Mildred was united in marriage to Delbert Lewis on February 14, 1944, at the Bethel Church in Ainsworth, Iowa. He preceded Mildred in death in 1970. Mildred later married Keith Houseal on January 31, 1976, in Brighton, Iowa. Keith passed away in 2001.
Mildred taught Country School for four years prior to her marriage. She later worked as a cook at the Brighton Café, worked in the housekeeping department of the United Presbyterian Home, was a Teacher’s Aide at Stewart Elementary, and worked in the Dietary Department at the Washington Care Center. Mildred worked in the Dietary Department of the Burlington Hospital for nine years until her retirement.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, was a 4-H leader for 14 years and was a member of Farm Bureau for several years. Mildred enjoyed reading, quilting, music, square dancing and volunteering at church. She especially enjoyed her time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by daughter, Connie (Kenny) Meyer of Wickenburg, Arizona; son, Duane (Ann) Lewis of Crawfordsville, Iowa; daughter, Sandy (Jeff) Suter of Washington, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Janet (Ron) Ward of Sigourney, Iowa; stepson, Terry (Judy) Houseal of Burlington, Iowa; stepson, Don (Sue) Houseal of Burlington, Iowa; as well as several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert, in 1970; husband, Keith, in 2001; three brothers, Theodore, Maurice and Ernest Meyer; and one sister, Virginia Aller.
