Nancy “Nan” A. Stark, age 87, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, December 28, 2023, at the Halcyon House.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Anthony DeVaughn officiating. Visiting hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery at a later date. Nancy was born July 9, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of George and Berniece Mary (Ostino) Langdon. She moved to Tipton, Iowa, where her parents owned and operated the local newspaper. She graduated from Tipton High School, then attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She later went on to receive her Degree in Education from the University of Iowa. Nan was united in marriage to Frederick Karl Stark on December 22, 1962, in Tipton, Iowa.

Following their marriage, Nan and Fred lived in Mt. Ayr, Iowa and later moved to Washington in 1973. She worked as the Catalog Supervisor for JC Penny and later held an office position at the McCleery Cumming Company. During her retirement years, Nan was a proofreader for the Washington Evening Journal. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, including over fifty years at the Washington United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. Nan was active in a number of community activities. She was a member of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra for 25 years. She was a member of the Washington Lions Club, and Fortnightly Club (Readers and Writers Group).

Nan especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed animals, especially the cats and dogs she had as pets. She liked music and books, taking walks and going on outings.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Stark of Washington, Iowa; son, David Stark of Chicago, Illinois; daughter, Julie Haney and husband Glen of Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Barbara Anderson and husband Gene of Richmond, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

Nan was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter in infancy, Susan Ann Stark; and one sister, Mary Jo Hoke.
