Nellie Muntz Swygard passed away from natural causes July 26, 2023 at the age of 92. She was born Nellie Ilene Muntz to Kenneth and Gladys (Lowery) Muntz September 22, 1930 at Pink Prairie farm 5 miles SW of Farmington, IA.

She attended Flat Rock country school and graduated from Farmington High School in 1948. From 1949 to 1954 she was employed at the Van Buren County Auditor’s Office. On her birthday in 1951 she married Gerald Lee Swygard at the Keosauqua Methodist Church. She was honored to be a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield where she served as Deacon, Elder, and was on the Christian education staff. She served as chairperson of both Van Buren and Jefferson County Historical Societies. In 2007 she received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for service at the Fairfield Senior Center.

Nellie is survived by brother Hilton Muntz, sons Stephen and Timothy, grandchildren Kassandra and Thomas, and great-grandchildren Lana White and Leonardo Swygard.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald Swygard and beloved granddaughter Kelly Amanda Swygard. Her cremated remains will be buried together with her husband’s at Steinmeyer Cemetery in rural Farmington IA.
