Norbert Joseph Hammes, age106 of Fairfield, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living.

Prayer Service will be at 4:15 p.m. with visitation for family and friends to follow at 5:00 pm. – 7:00 pm, Friday, July 5, 2019, at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2019, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Nick Adam officiating. Following the luncheon, burial will be at STs Peter & Paul Cemetery, Clear Creek, Iowa.

In-lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, The Lords Cupboard, Hospice Compassus, Camp Courageous or Donor's choice. Cards and memorials may be mailed to Marie Hammes, 3000 West Madison, Apt #209, Fairfield, Iowa 52556.

Norbert was born March 19, 1913, to C.P. and Lena (Vogel) Hammes in Clear Creek Township. He married Marie Anna Greiner November 28, 1940, at St Mary's Catholic Church in Keota. They have been married 78 ½ years and this year they received a certificate for the longest married couple in the state of Iowa. They were blessed with 7 children, Jim, Rose, Carol, Steve, John, Barb and Mary. When they all get together there are 89 of them.

Norbert and Marie bought their farm in 1946 where he farmed until he retired. One of his other interests was to work alongside his Dad doing carpenter work. Norbert loved his family and looked forward to family gatherings where they would all be together.

Norbert was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was 4th degree Knights of Columbus. Some of his other organizations he belonged to were Lions Club and a life time member of the Elks.

Norbert will be missed by his wife, Marie; his children, Jim (Rita) of Fairfield, Rose (Dave) Bollei of Tiffin, Carol (Dan) Vorhies of Monticello, John (Rhonda) of Fairfield, Barb (Jim Deutsch) Hammes of Fairfield and Mary (Tony) Webb of Batavia; 16 grandchildren, John (Amy) Peiffer, Ann Peiffer, Jeff (Brenda) Hammes, Laurie (Jon) Haman, Shelly (Eric) Schmit, Lonnie Bollei, Sue (Todd) Manternach, Chris (Randy Harris) Vorhies, Bill (Megan) Vorhies, Trent (Crystal) Hammes, Gavin (Amanda) Hammes, Angie (Chuck Hunt) Hughell, Mandy (Jeremy) Pohren, JJ (Carissa) Hughell, Darin (Amanda Pichler) Webb and Logan (AJ) Webb; 38 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Krier of Sigourney and one sister-in-law, Marlene Hammes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, C.P. and Lena Hammes; son, Steve Hammes; great granddaughter, Kaylynn Bollei; 8 siblings, Clarissa Hammes, Marcella Schneider, Paul, Orville, Eldred, Charles, Bob Hammes, and Mary Webb.
