Norma Jane Witt was born on June 22, 1936, in rural Van Buren County to David and Mary Hootman Laughlin. She attended country school in her early years and graduated from Douds High School with the class of 1953. Upon graduation, she attended Iowa Success Business School in Ottumwa and began clerical work for John Morrell. On Sept. 9, 1956, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert Witt. This was the beginning of a story that lasted nearly 65 years.
Early in their marriage they moved throughout Missouri and Iowa as Robert worked construction. During that time, they became loving parents to two daughters, Marla and Michelle. In 1964, the family moved back to Douds, Iowa, where they began farming and started Witt Dozing. Norma was the bookkeeper for both.
Norma cared deeply for the Douds community. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Club, a 4-H leader, and was active in the Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, where she sang in the choir and served as treasurer for over 40 years.
Norma was a gifted seamstress and cook. She enjoyed tending to her garden, and bowling with her friends in a league. Norma and Bob enjoyed camping every year at the Iowa State Fair and traveled to Texas for several weeks in the winter.
Norma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be deeply missed by her family and the community.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, James Laughlin.
Left to share her story are her husband, Robert Witt of Douds, Iowa; two daughters, Marla (David) Erickson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Michelle "Shelley" (Joseph) Moyer of Burlington, Iowa; three grandchildren, Hilary (Kevin) Landis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Marshall (Clara) Moyer of Kansas City, Mo., and Madison (Taylor) Tucker of Boone, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Amelia, Laura and James Landis; one sister, Julie (Manuel) Williams of Beaufort, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Mary Harwood (John) of Oskaloosa, Iowa; as well as many extended family and friends.
