Norman P.C. Paar, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, died 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. Keith Haerer officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Beatty Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
Mr. Paar was born Jan. 16, 1907, at Warsaw, Ill., the son of Charles and Theresa Weigand Paar. He married Jane Zimmerschied Dec. 28, 1946, at Keokuk. He graduated from Warsaw High School, earned his bachelor?s degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind., and did additional college work at the University of Washington in Seattle. He received his master?s degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and did additional graduate work at the University of Iowa.
During World War II he served as a U.S.O. staff director in Lake Charles, La. He taught in Agar, S.D.; Libby, Mont.; Warsaw, Ill.; and Royal Oak, Mich. In Waukon and Mt. Pleasant he served as director of the guidance program. After retiring he volunteered for 18 years as a teacher?s aide in Harlan Elementary School. He received the Joan Morrison Friend of Education award in April 1979. He also served on a number of community boards including mental health center boards. A member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, he held many church offices and taught Sunday School.
He was a member of the Iowa Secondary Educator?s Association and the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association. He was formerly a member of Mt. Pleasant Country Club and the Cotillion Club. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa National Professional Fraternity, Kappa Delta Pi honorary educational fraternity, and was inducted as an honorary member of Lampas Chapter and the National Honor Society.
Survivors include his wife, two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
