Oren W. Jarvis, age 85, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.
Celebration of life services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Darren Brown and Pastor Jim Cluney officiating. The family will be present to receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Interment with military honors will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials donations can be given to Grace Community Church or Gideons International. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Oren was born June 17, 1938, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Harold and Verna (Fry) Jarvis. He graduated from Washington High School and served in the United States Navy. He was united in marriage to Mary Schillerstrom on May 31, 1959, in Fairfield, Iowa. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he went into business with his father. Oren later worked as a Financial Advisor for 36 years, retiring in 1999.
Oren was a life long member or the First Christian Church/Grace Community Church. On September 22, 1991, he gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ.
He was a member of Gideon’s International, Amvets, American Legion Post 29, served on the board of the Washington Community Theater and had a prison ministry for over 14 years at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility. He was a former member of the YMCA, Jaycees, Kiwanis, Community Chest, Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Washington Golf and Country Club Board of Directors. Oren made various mission trips around the world with his daughter. He enjoyed golfing, fishing in Canada, gardening and spending the winter months in Florida.
He is survived by his daughter, Rev. Monica Jarvis of Leesburg, Florida; son Barry Jarvis (Jill Kelley) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sister, Beverly Krotz of Washington, Iowa; sister, Marianne Hanshaw of Washington, Iowa; sister-in-law, Connie Jarvis of Washington, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Oren was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary in 2022; brother, Yale Jarvis; mother-in-law, Edith Schillerstrom; brothers-in-law, Jim Hanshaw, Duane Krotz, Bob Schillerstrom, Roy Schillerstrom; sister-in-law, Elizabeth West and nephew, Dan Krotz.
