ROCKFORD, Ill. - William J. Masson Jr., 93, of Rockford, Ill., formerly of Dekalb, Ill. and Iowa City, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006 in St. Anne Center, Rockford, after a short illness. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2 in Holy Family Catholic Church in Rockford. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Joseph's

KALONA - Virginia P. Swartzendruber, 85, of Kalona died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006 in Pleasantview Home after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31 in Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona with the Rev. Lynn Patrick officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. The body was donated to science. Burial will be at a later date in Sharon Hill Cemetery.

Ornithologist says more birds failed to fly south this winter
Many birds usually missed in the winter are being spotted around town due to this year's mild weather. Local bird enthusiast Diane Porter said bird species that completely migrate south, such as swallows and chimney swifts, have all left the area.
