Sheriff
Jefferson County Sheriff?s Office is investigating a burglary/breaking and entering that occurred to a residence in Batavia sometime between 2 a.m. and 5 p.m. Feb. 10. Forcible entry on a door was used. Several tools were stolen, valued at a total of $8,447.

Two-vehicle accident reported Saturday
Jefferson County Sheriff?s Office responded at 6:07 p.m. Saturday to a two-vehicle accident on Packwood Road, about a half-mile north of Highway 34.Raymond Steffen, 48, of Ottumwa, was driving a semi-tractor trailer south on Packwood Road.Heath Huggins, 34, of Bloomfield, was driving a Jeep north on Packwood Road. Fairfield Police Department responded to a two-vehicle accident at 1:11 p.m. Friday at West Grimes Avenue and North 16th Street. Danny Jo Campbell, 64, of Fairfield, was driving a 2000 Dodge Caravan north on 16th Street and tried to stop at the stop sign. Fairfield Fire Department responded at 11:54 p.m. Friday to a report of smoke in a house at 601 N. Third St. Investigation found clothes with oil burned in the clothes dryer. Firefighters ventilated the home and returned to the station at 12:35 a.m. Saturday.

Coal-powered plant in eastern Iowa closes
MUSCATINE (AP) ? A coal-fueled power plant in eastern Iowa has closed and will be demolished to make way for green space.The Muscatine Journal reports that the CIPCO Fair Station near Montpelier burned the last of its coal on Nov. 2.
