Double Bad Luck
All those double-yolk eggs might not be bringing the good luck I thought they would. I was backing the tractor into the garage to fill the fuel tank with diesel when I heard a crunch, bang and some popping noises. I stopped the tractor and turned around to see what I had run over. A sinking feeling swept through me. The roll bar on the tractor had caught on the garage door and about tore the whole thing down. ...

Linger in the presence of God
Neh. 9:3 ?The Book of the Law of the Lord their God was read aloud to them for about three hours. Then for three more hours they took turns confessing their sins and worshipping the LORD their God.?When was the last time you were in a six hour church service? For most of us, a service that lasts much more than an hour really makes us antsy and anxious for it to end. How would you like to listen to three hours ...

Heroes or sensationalists?
On Sunday afternoon, while sitting in the lobby of an auto service shop waiting for the mechanic to tell me how many hundreds of dollars he was going to charge me to fix my car, I watched with gaping mouth as a reporter on MSNBC was hit by a flying object on air while standing in the middle of Hurricane Irma.Meteorologist for The Weather Channel, Mike Seidel, was literally being blown away from the camera crew ...

Roomba does the rumba
Ginnie came to me in a panic. ?I can't find Roomba!?Roomba is a computerized vacuum cleaner I gave Ginnie for her birthday. I know, you shouldn't give your wife a vacuum cleaner for her birthday, but she loves it. It's like an old friend. Turn Roomba loose in any area of the house, and she vacuums better than we can the old fashioned way. She's short and compact and whirls under furniture like a ballerina.Ginnie...

Mr. President: Forget about Twitter
I just don?t understand Donald Trump. I doubt whether I am alone in that thinking.Prior to his presidential eletion win in November, Trump never held elective office. While some may see that as a blessing, I see it as a double-edged sword. It is refreshing to see a non-politican or a non-member of the ?swamp,? elected to public office. However, with public service comes a responsibility, much larger than that ...

Titles of Jesus at the cross
?the rulers even sneered at him. They said, ?He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.? Luke 23:35Three times in Luke?s account of the crucifixion, Jesus is mocked and tempted to come down from the cross. First, by the religious rulers, second, by the Roman soldiers and third, by the unrepentant criminal on the cross beside him (Luke 23:35-39).Satan is behind the scenes ...

Avoid pride in success, be ?well-grounded? in Christ
By Rev. Jim Hughes II Chron. 26:16: But when he had become powerful, he also became proud, which led to his downfall. He sinned against the LORD his God by entering the sanctuary of the LORD?s temple and personally burning incense on it.Uzziah became king over Judah when he was 16-years-old, and he was a good king. He led the people of Judah into a spiritual reformation. He got rid of the many ungodly things ...

Too much fame way too early
By Brooks Taylor,Mt. Pleasant News Imagine having the best day of your life as a 12-year-old and then being ridiculed for it for years afterward. You probably never heard of Cody Webster. That?s OK, you have plenty of company, unless you live in Washington state.Webster peaked early, reminiscent of one of my boyhood friends who was 5-10 as an eighth-grader and the best basketball player on the junior high ...

Writer applauds local ?good guy?
To the editor, A while back, I was driving home from Winfield with my old car loaded on the trailer when I came across a car sitting along side the road. Now this is something we all see quite often, but this one was different, it was a 1977 AMC Pacer; remember them? This car was beautiful, or at least as much as a Pacer can be. It had won national honors of first place, but yet with over 300,000 miles it gave ...
