Patricia “Pat” Maxine Roberts, 91, of Washington, formerly of Ainsworth, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2022, at Washington County Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022 in Oregon Township Cemetery. Services will be followed by a meal at the Ainsworth Community Church. Friends and family are invited. Memorials may be directed to Ainsworth First Responders and the Ainsworth Community Church in memory of Pat. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Pat was born on October 11, 1930, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of John (son of Irish immigrants), and Maxine (Stephens) Elliott (an Iowa farm girl).

Pat attended grade school in Chicago. In 1942, her family moved to Ainsworth (her mother’s hometown) for her father to open a grocery store. Pat graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1947. Pat attended Iowa Wesleyan College to obtain her teaching certificate. Pat taught a year at Cotter Elementary and one year at Ainsworth. She was united in marriage to Carl W. Roberts on June 4, 1950. They raised six children on a farm south of Ainsworth. She was a member of the Ainsworth Community Church. Pat and Pat Jenkins established and operated The Children’s House, a preschool/daycare center, in Ainsworth in 1973. They later expanded into Washington and Columbus Junction. Later, like her father, Pat opened and operated a grocery store with her daughters in downtown Ainsworth. Pat and Carl later divorced. Pat met Jim Smith in Florida. They exchanged vows at Gulf Cove United Methodist Church, Port Charlotte, FL. Pat and Jim spent 17 years together in Florida, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Pat enjoyed traveling, music, and family.

Pat will be deeply missed by her children, Michael (Mary Jo) Roberts of West Branch, Stephen (Karen) Roberts of Iowa City, Jane (Carl) Mann of Danville, David (Kathy) Roberts of Ainsworth, Amy (Mark) Runge of Solon, and daughter-in-law, Rocky Roberts of Ainsworth; grandchildren, Dan (Tamra) Roberts of Tipton, Lisa (Jonathan Phelps) Roberts of Grand Junction, CO, Jason Roberts of Naperville, IL, Justin (Jenna) Mann of Virginia Beach, VA, Erin (Zach) Griebahn of Mt. Pleasant, Zach (Callyn) Roberts of Ainsworth, Rosalind (Michael) Cavin of Ainsworth, Jordan Runge of Cedar Rapids, Jenna Runge of Solon; eight great-grandchildren; sibling, Bob (Maggie) Elliott of Iowa City; brother-in-law, Dale (Maurine) Roberts of Washington; many nieces and nephews; and loving partner, Jim Smith of Washington.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; son, James Roberts; brother, John Elliott; sister-in-law, Barbara Elliott; and Carl Roberts.
