Patricia “Patty” Ann Hinkel, age 74, of Ottumwa, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital following a brief illness.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, with services conducted by Kele Allison. The family will be present to receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Finley Chapel Cemetery in Trenton, Iowa. Patty was born on February 4, 1951, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Fletcher and Evelyn Lucille (Hookom) Payne. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1969 and later graduated from Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas. In 1986, she was united in marriage to Terry Wayne Hinkel. The couple later divorced.
Patty spent most of her adult life in Ottumwa, where she worked for Tenco Industries for 36 years until her retirement in 2014. She deeply loved her family and cherished time spent with them, especially at Old Threshers. She enjoyed traveling to visit loved ones, going shopping, playing cards, and attending the War Eagle Craft Fair in Arkansas. Patty dealt with cerebral palsy all her life and will be remembered as a fighter.
She is survived by her children: son, Daniel Hinkel of Ottumwa, Iowa; and daughters, Jenifer (Brian) Allison, Victoria Jay, and Brandi (Brian) Chapin, all of Ottumwa, Iowa; along with 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Glen Richard (Jean) Payne of Burlington, Iowa; brother, Gerald “Butch” Payne of Burlington, Iowa; sister, Kathy (David) Luhn of Fayetteville, Arkansas; sister, Donna (Dennis) Pacha of Washington, Iowa; and sister, Janet (David) Welder of Unionville, Missouri; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews, including her special niece, Janey Payne, who all affectionately called her “Patty Cakes.”
Patty was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Susan Kay Payne; and brother, LeRoy Payne.
