Perl E. Messer, 80, of Wayland died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at the Parkview Home in Wayland.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at the Cottonwood United Methodist Church in Wayland with the Rev. Carl Klein officiating. Burial will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland with family present following the 7 p.m. Masonic service at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to the Cottonwood Cemetery.
Mr. Messer was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Glasgow, the son of Arthur H. and Elsie McPheron Messer. He married Betty Brewster on March 4, 1942. He was a member of the Cottonwood United Methodist Church, served on the church boards, and was past President of the Cottonwood Cemetery Association. He was a member of Adoniram Lodge #120 of Wayland, past member of the Richland, Iowa Lodge, an active member of Scottish Rights and Kaaba Shrine. He was also a 50-year member of the Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Richland Lions, and a member and past president of the Wayland Lions Club. For many years, he played on the men's softball league and was active with organizations for young boys. He served many years as a 4-H leader, and as a coach and umpire in local baseball leagues. He served on the Coppock City Council, was a longtime Funk's G corn dealer, and farmed in Henry, Jefferson, and Washington counties. After retiring from the farm, he and his wife moved to Wayland, where he worked for the Brooks Meat Plant and Farmers and Merchants telephone.
Survivors include his wife of Wayland; four sons, Laverne, Gene, and Gary Messer, all of Wayland, and Dan Messer of Washington; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Guy Messer of Mt. Pleasant, Ernest Messer of Wayland, and Harold Messer of Olds. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and four sisters.
