Phyllis Marie Balzer Breuer Hughes, 91, of New London, died Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at New London Specialty Care.
She was born Dec. 3, 1929, in Burlington, the daughter of Martin and Gertrude Hull Balzer. On June 26, 1949, Phyllis married Hugh Breuer. He died Nov. 11, 2007. On Feb. 28, 2010, she married Paul Hughes. He died July 18, 2018.
She was a 1947 graduate of Burlington High School, a member of Salem Congregational Church and the Alpha Club. She was a homemaker who loved living on the farm and helping with chores and gardening. But most of all, she loved studying the Bible and teaching Sunday school classes. She taught from the time she was a teenager until she had to give up teaching due to failing health. Her favorite song was, "I Love To Tell The Story." She and her husband Hugh helped with Christian friends, John and Annette Groover, to start a new church in Winter Haven, Fla.
Phyllis loved and enjoyed her five children: Linda (Lanny) Rowe of Jesup, Georgia, Alan (Darcella) Breuer of Palmyra, Mo.,, Luan (Sid) Schmitt of New London, Bruce (Shari) Breuer of Mount Pleasant; stepson, Tim (Kay) Hughes of McNeal, Ariz.; and stepdaughter, Christine McCurdy of Tulsa, Okla. She is also survived by brother, Robert Balzer of West Burlington; and sister, Donna Hightower of Mount Pleasant: eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; one son, Brian; brother, Ronald; sisters, Helen Miller and Mabel Peterson; and stepdaughter, Becky Ryan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 5, at Salem Congregational Church, Salem, Iowa, with burial following at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service and a memorial has been established to the church. Social distancing and masks would be appreciated.
